Amadeo R. Lombardo, WWII Veteran, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and Friend.
Amadeo “Amie” R. Lombardo, born in Pittsburgh on December 29,1925, died peacefully after a brief illness on November 26, 2023. Amie had been living in Meadville, PA, for the past 18 years.
Amie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, enlisting on March 22, 1944, and was honorably discharged May 19, 1946. He served in the Pacific theater aboard the USS Hector (AR-7) an Auxiliary Repair Ship, which was part of the U.S. Navy’s armada of supply and repair ships just behind the Pacific front that kept the frontline warships stocked with everything from food to weaponry. The Hector played a crucial role in the triage of damaged warships and “either sent them back to the front after repairs or sent them back to Pearl for further repairs,” as Amie told the story. Soon after his discharge, he met Pittsburgher Marie Esther Santillo on a blind date. They were married on June 7, 1947.
Amie spent his professional career in Pittsburgh as a shop-carpenter building convention displays for clients, then accepted a position in Rochester, NY, eventually becoming an on-site manager for the assembly of the sales and product displays at various convention centers throughout the U.S. After several such trips to Las Vegas, many times accompanied by his wife Marie, they chose that as their retirement location. While retired in Las Vegas, Amie regularly played Senior Softball and was part of a team that won two Senior Softball World Series Championships. With the decline of Marie’s health, they opted to relocate back to Pennsylvania in order to be closer to their daughter Amy and son in law, Darel, in Cambridge Springs, PA. He became the full-time caregiver for Marie during her long battle with dementia until her death, July 14, 2013.
After Marie’s passing, Amie traveled outside the United States for the first time since his World War II service and was able to visit son Michael in Senegal and Eswatini, where Michael was posted for the State Department.
Amie’s family has applied for the interment of his ashes at either Arlington National Cemetery or a National Cemetery close to his home town, Pittsburgh.
Amie was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his three children, Thomas (Hope) Lombardo, Amy Lombardo, and Michael (Netty) Lombardo, and by his seven grandchildren, Michelle (Kuklinski) Arbogast, Jeffrey (Lisa) Kuklinski, Robert Kuklinski, Lyssa Presley, Lucia Lombardo, Sante Lombardo, Pinta Marie Lombardo, and by his five great grandchildren, Gannon Arbogast, Lydia Kuklinski, Charlotte Kuklinski, Alex Kuklinski, and Alana Kuklinski. Amie is also survived by his sister Mary Costabile and close friend Sue Emert. He was preceded in death by his 2 Brother's, a twin Brother, Angelo Lombardo, and John Lombardo, a son-in-law Darel R. Cooper, Nov 24, 2021 and daughter-in-law Lana S. Lombardo, April 13, 1985.
