Benedicto Barretta

Benedicto Barretta, 84, of Meadville passed away peacefully, Sunday, November 23, 2014, at the Marquette Hospice House of Crawford County. He was born October 7, 1930 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, a son of Pietro and Rosalia (Lupo) Barretta. He married Patricia (Wood) Barretta, she preceded him in death August 2013. Benny graduated in 1948 from the Meadville High School. He retired from Talon Zippers; he had previously worked at General Electric, Erie Division. He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard's Heavy Mortar Company, 112th Infantry during the Korean Conflict serving with the United States Army and remained active with the Heavy Mortar Company after discharge. He was a life-time member of the Italian Civic Club. Benny loved the outdoors and spent most of his time boating & fishing, gardening, mushroom foraging and he always had his walking sticks with him while he walked for exercise. He was often in the kitchen preparing Italian meals from scratch for his family. He loved to read books and at one time had a very extensive library. Benny looked forward to his morning coffee with his friends at McDonalds. Those that knew him, knew he had a great sense of humor. He was proud of his Sicilian heritage. Benny is survived by his three daughters, Shaunna (James) Crecraft of Cambridge Springs, Belinda (Craig) Baker of Meadville and Brenda (Brian) Crecraft of Maryland; his eight grandchildren; Shane, Joe, Ashley, Chad, Seneca, Sequoyah, Jaim, Lorie and two great grandchildren, Kyler and Abagail; two brothers, Sam Barretta of Meadville and Tony (Patti) Barretta of Virginia; one sister, Anna Ambrose of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents; brothers Peter and Joe; sisters Rosalia Fera, Elizabeth Sturm, Cira Barretta, Marian Barisano and an infant sister Anna Barretta Per Benny's wishes, there will be no viewing hours. Private burial in St Brigid's Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. The family plans on having a Celebration of Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine Street, Meadville, PA 16335 or to the donor's choice.
