Benjamin “Benny” Shope, age 85, of Meadville passed away August 19, 2019 surrounded by his family at Cleveland Clinic after heart surgery. He was born May 29, 1934 in Myersdale, PA to the late Benjamin F. and Rhea (Aurandt) Shope. He married Ruth Quinter March 15, 1957. She survives.
Benny graduated from Meadville Area High School. He was employed by Coca Cola and Snapple as a control manager and a delivery driver. He is a former member of the Sertoma Club. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved fishing and owned his own fishing tackle shop (Ben’s Bait and Grub) at Woodcock Dam in Saegertown for years. He also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino.
He is of Protestant faith.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth; a daughter, Pam Schultz and her husband, Wally of Saegertown; two sons, Doug Shope and his wife, Linda of Venango and Brad Shope of Meadville; 3 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; eight step-great grandchildren, a son-in-law, Larry Seitz of Chillicothe, OH; several nieces and nephews and his cat, Squiggy.
Benny was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frank Shope and Harry Shope; a daughter, Joy Lynn Seitz and a grandson, Garrett Shope.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for September. Details will follow.
In lieu of fresh flowers, the family suggests artificial arrangements so they can enjoy them for years to come.
