Carl Lynn Griggs

Carl Lynn Griggs, age 91, of Conneaut Lake, PA died Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Rolling Fields Nursing Home. He was born December 24, 1921 in Conneaut Lake, PA the son of the late Clarence W. and Margaret E. (Ramsey) Griggs. He married June Devenny on October 22, 1951. She survives. Carl was a 1939 graduate of Conneaut Lake High School, where he played basketball for four years. He was self-employed concrete contractor. In March of 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army, in the 302 Infantry Reg., 94th Division during World War II, earning the rank of Platoon Sergeant, then 1st Sergeant. He was a Green Hornet, earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct EAME Ribbon with Bronze Service Stars for Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central European Campaigns, Military Intelligence Training, Army Commendation Expert Infantry. He was honorably discharged in September of 1948 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. President Eisenhower's son was his first Company Commander and he had the opportunity to meet George Patton and wore the soles out of his shoes parading for him. He was a lifetime member of the Linesville VFW. He is survived by his loving wife, June Griggs of Conneaut Lake, PA. two sons; Thomas Griggs and his wife, Barbara of Hartstown, PA and Gary Griggs of Conneaut Lake, PA, five grandchildren; Shawnya Lewis and her husband, Stephen of Meadville, PA., Deanna Griggs-Byler and her husband Ben Byler of Conneaut Lake, PA, Joanna Catlin, United States Army, Forte Meade, Maryland, Coulter Griggs of Conneaut Lake, PA, Kelly Griggs of Hartstown, PA; three great-grandchildren, Cody Lewis of Meadville, PA, Landyn Byler and Taylor Byler both of Conneaut Lake, PA. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by three brothers, George Griggs, Charley Griggs, and Clarence Griggs, and by two sisters, Charlotte Jessup and Ellen Gamble. The family would like to thank the Southern Care Hospice and the staff at Rolling Fields for the loving care given to Carl. Calling will be held on Friday, October 11, 2013 from 11 AM until time of the Memorial Service at 1 PM at the Dickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 N Second Street, Conneaut Lake, PA, with Pastor Joe Kaufer, of Southern Care Hospice, officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to Southern Care Hospice, 1245 Park Avenue, Meadville, PA 16335 or to Rolling Fields Nursing Home, 9108 State Hwy 198, Conneautville, PA 16406.
