Charles George Thompson, age 82, of Thoburn Village, Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville, PA, passed away on Tuesday June 13, 2023 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He was born on August 27, 1940 in Hartstown, PA to the late John and Irene (Goss) Thompson. He married his first wife, Ruth Wheelock in 1964. She preceded him in death in 1990. He then married Audrey Lilly in 1993. She survives.
Charles previously resided in Richmond Township (until this past year) where for over 50 years he enjoyed many years of raising horses/ponies and gardening, working in his garage and spending time with family and friends. He was a family and faith oriented man; curious and a life-long learner, loving, caring, practical, dedicated and kind.
Charles was a 1958 graduate of Conneaut Lake High School and a 1962 graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. in Agriculture. He proudly served in the US Navy on the USS Vigil.
He graduated from his Tool & Die apprenticeship program in 1969. He was employed by Talon, Inc. for over 25 years. He then worked at Imperial Carbide, Inc. until his retirement in 2002.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Hartstown, PA and attended Townville United Methodist Church, North Richmond United Methodist Church and Blooming Valley United Methodist Church for many years.
Charles had an “old soul” and had many diverse interests. He enjoyed years of vacationing with family and friends by horse and covered wagon in Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Rhode Island. He was a member of the Appalachian Wagon Train Association (PA), a member of the National Wagon Train Association (TN), Chaparajos 4-H Club Leader and affiliated with the 4-H Leader Dog Program, a past President of the Townville Lions Club, sailed as a volunteer crew member on the Flagship Niagara, and enjoyed antique tractors participating in antique tractor pulling and gatherings of the Pioneer Steam and Gas Engine Society.
In addition to his wife of 30 years, Audrey, he is survived by his son, Mark Thompson and his wife, Deborah Thompson of Conneaut Lake, PA; his daughter, Amy Thompson of Greensboro, NC; his stepsons, Mark Lilly of Cambridge Springs, PA and stepson, Matthew Lilly and his wife, Amy of Greenville, SC; his grandchildren, Morgan Thompson of Somerville, MA, Rachel Rothermel and her husband, Eric of McDonald, PA, Taylor Lilly of Greenville, SC and Justin Lilly of Greenville, SC; his great grandson, Jackson Rothermel of McDonald, PA and his nephew, Leland Sayles and his wife, Karen of Hartstown, PA.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Ruth, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Salena and James Sayles and their daughter, Debbie.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
Charles will be buried in Kingsley Cemetery in Townville, PA.
