Clyde Ellis Spangler

Clyde E. Spangler, 89, of Cooperstown, PA, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Golden Living Center, Oil City, with his family by his side. He was born Feb. 1, 1924 at home, in Plum Township, Venango County, the son of the late Bert L. and Ethel J. Reynolds Spangler. He married Martha J. Holz on January 16, 1948. She preceded him in death on September 13, 2005. He was a United States Army Veteran, serving during WWII, in New Guinea and Southern Philippines. He served in the CO B 153rd Engineer Combat Battalion. He had received a Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, with 2 Bronze Stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He had been active with and attended the 153rd Engineer Combat reunions. He was also a Lifetime member of the VFW, Franklin and a member of the American Legion. He had been a farmer, a sawyer at his own sawmill, and had also been employed as an aide at the Polk State Hospital. He was a member of the Chapmanville Community Church. Surviving are seven children, Elaine Myers and her husband, David of Cooperstown, PA., Edward Spangler and his wife, Hilary of Kingsville, MD, John Spangler and his wife, Christa of Middle River, MD, Mary Williams and her husband, Glen of Cooperstown, PA., Jane Kennedy and her husband Roy of Cooperstown, PA., William Spangler and his wife, Rachael of Titusville, PA., and Dale Spangler and his wife, Terry of Titusville, PA, ten grandchildren, Shelly Craig and her husband, Paul, Sherry Myers and her companion, Charlie Paden, Jesse Spangler, Tobias Spangler, Jacob Spangler, Robert Williams, Toni Wakefield and her husband, Terry, Joshua Williams and his wife, Jessica, John Kennedy and his wife, Melissa and Korey Kennedy. Also surviving are 21 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin Spangler, Wade "Pete" Spangler, and Glenn Spangler, and four sisters, Edith Huff, Doris Moyer, Isla Williams, and Velma Rice, a grandson, Matthew Williams, and a great-granddaughter, Allyssa Wakefield. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, at 11 AM at the Chapmanville Community Church, with the Rev. Joseph P. Martin of Bradleytown United Methodist Church, officiating. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Venango Veteran's Honor Guard. Interment will be in the Sunville Cemetery, Plum Township.
