Daniel Werner

November 12, 1930 — March 11, 2021

Daniel William Werner passed away peacefully on March 11, 2021 at the age of 90. Dan was born during a large apple season on the family farm in New Baltimore, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1930 to Cletus Werner and Adelaide (Benning) Werner, who both predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Louise "Dolly" Werner (Kotermanski), with whom he cherished 57 years of joyful travel, happiness and love, daughter Donna Devlin of Mt. Lebanon, PA , granddaughter Lindsay Hyer (Samuel) of Indianapolis, IN.

Dan was one of 15 children; those surviving are Jim Werner, Mary Jane Zupan, Dorthea Hoag, John Werner, Nancy Kennedy, Robert Werner, and Charles Werner. His deceased siblings are Ruth Butela, Tom Werner, Joseph Werner, Katheryn Mitcheltree, June Price, Blanche Petry and Caroll Ann Erickson. Dan adored his large family and always looked forward to the Werner reunion at the farm every summer where he enjoyed hayrides and storytelling.

Shortly after graduating from Schellsburg-Napier High School in Schellsburg, PA, Dan proudly joined and served in the United States Navy where he became one of the founding crew members of the VP-11 Squadron and travelled the world. He always reminisced and shared fond memories of his time in the service. You didn't have to know Dan long to understand his vast knowledge and respect for the Navy and flying. Each Memorial Day, you could find Dan patriotically marching in the parade through Conneaut Lake.

Upon returning to Pennsylvania after the Navy, Dan began working in the construction trade and became employed by the Ruhlin Company where he was a carpenter superintendent on large heavy highway projects, hydroelectric power stations and industrial buildings. His job brought Dan to meet the love of his life, Dolly, in 1960 through her brother, Frank, while they began working at the Kinzua Dam, which is what brought Dan to settle in the Conneaut Lake area. He retired from Ruhlin after 31 years.

Dan had a green thumb, which was evident by their massive, pristine garden and you could never forget his favorite flowers - gladiolus and daisies - because he had a separate garden just for those and when the seasons changed, he turned his attention to his favorite sport of hockey.

After retirement, Dan enjoyed traveling the United States with Dolly, Donna and Lindsay to visit family and see America's monuments, national parks, and pastimes. Some of his fondest memories include watching the Giants play at Candlestick Park with nephews Scott and Michael Erickson, spending time with family in Minot, North Dakota and Phoenix, Arizona, to name a few. Dan was able to see the Grand Canyon, Devil's Tower, the Badlands, Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore. They also traveled to Brunswick, Maine so Dan could show his family where he was initially stationed in the Navy. He had a passion for bluegrass music and listening to the Grand Ole Opry.

Dan was an active member of his church, Our Lady of the Americas, and held dear the friendships formed there. He was also a member of the Carpenters Union Locals 2274 and 435, the Knights of Columbus, Elks Club and the American Legion Post 587.

Fair winds and following seas, Dan.

The family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff of Avalon Springs Place, especially Dan's beautiful niece, Paula Bartges, for all her unconditional care, love and support.
