Dean Allen Callender

October 17, 1935 — January 11, 2016

Dean Allen Callender, 80, of Harmonsburg passed away peacefully, Monday, January 11, 2016 at Hamot Hospital in Erie. Dean was born October 17, 1935 in Eikietown, PA, a son of the late Lindsay (Abe) and Charlotte Callender. His wife, the former Alberta M Campbell, whom he married December 28, 1956, preceded him in death June 1, 1997. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother and a special companion of 13 years, Jeanne Talbot. Survivors include 4 children, Denise Shuffstall and her husband Lew of Conneaut Lake, Brenda Williams and her husband Doug of Conneaut Lake, Scott Callender and his wife Jen of Cochranton, and Tonya Nemeth and her husband Kevin of Conneaut Lake. Four grandchildren, Jenna Williams and her fiance Nick Hasselback, Justin Williams and girlfriend Kim Darke, Zack Callender, and Kayla Callender.  Our family was blessed this past year with Dean's first great grandchild, Sylva Jane Hasselback, a brother, Boyd Callender and his wife Mona of Hanover PA and his nephews, Christopher, Steven, and Mark and their families. Dean graduated from Linesville High School in 1955. Dean worked at Conneaut Lake Park for 7 years while attending high school. Dean served in the US Army Military Police and was stationed at Fort Ritchie in Highfield MD where he met his wife Alberta of 41 years. After moving back to this area in 1959, Dean worked for American Viscose/Avtex for 31 years. He took early retirement in December of 1990 and always said it was one of the best decisions he ever made allowing him to enjoy life and spend more time with his family and doing what he wanted to do.  For the past 18 years he served on the board of Conneaut Lake Joint Municipal Authority and Harmonsburg Evergreen Cemetery. In his younger years, Dean was an active fire fighter of the Summit Township Volunteer Fire Department. Dean was always doing things for family, friends, and strangers. His kind and giving nature was a special gift to all who knew him.  His warm heart and gentle smile will be missed dearly.  Dean's final wishes were to have no services or memorials. He came into this world quietly and that is the way he wished to leave.  Please remember a special moment you may have shared with Dean and find peace knowing that he cherished that moment as well.              Please sign Dean’s online guestbook at hatheway-tedeso.com Arrangements have been entrusted to the Dickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 N Second Street, Conneaut Lake, PA 16316
