Eugene Tome

February 17, 1933 — June 16, 2023

Eugene (Gene) Francis Tome passed away on Friday June 16, 2023 due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease.  He was born in 1933 in Erie, PA to Ora and Eleanor Tome and graduated from Millcreek High School.  He married his high school sweetheart Carole Ruth Gilmore in 1953.  He served in the US Army from 1953-55 and then was employed by The Retail Credit Company, subsequently Equifax, as an insurance investigator in the Meadville area.  After retiring, he continued working part-time at Hanna’s Hardware in Townville.  Gene and Carole, along with a few friends and family, built their dream retirement home on a secluded property near Cambridge Springs where they spent many hours tending their garden, gathering firewood and enjoying life in the woods.  Gene led a life of service, serving as a deacon and choir member at First Presbyterian Church of Meadville, treasurer of the Meadville Lions Club, president of the Saegertown Lions Club, Exulted Ruler of the Meadville Benevolent Order of Elks, and a board member of the Bethesda Children’s Home. He also served on the Penncrest school board and enjoyed singing with the Wesbury Barbershoppers. He and Carole adopted Gravel Run Road where they collected trash for over 20 years.

Gene and Carole raised two sons, Michael and Tracy, and imparted their love of the outdoors to them through many camping trips, hikes, and canoe paddles.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carole; two sons, Michael and his wife, Karin (Becker) and Tracy and his wife, Suzie (Peterson); grandchildren Jesse, Ethan, Jacob, Eli, and Samuel;  his brother, Ronald and wife, Sharon (McCormick) and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Gerald; two younger brothers, John and Robert and a sister, Lois (Tome) Cermack.

Gene’s family would like to thank the nurses, aides, and staff at the Grace Rehabilitation and Health Center at Westbury, and Hospice of Crawford County.

No public viewing is scheduled.  A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
