Frances Margaretta “Peg” Weymer, 98, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025, following a period of declining health.
Peg was born November 17, 1926, in Assiut, Egypt. Her parents, James and Minnie (Rapp) McKnight, were agricultural missionaries with the United Presbyterian Church, stationed near Khartum in North Sudan. Peg spent her childhood in the Sudan, and her experiences there shaped her positive lifelong outlook. Her love of fabrics, color, and design as well as her interest in people, other cultures, travel, and abiding faith took root in her childhood. She had resilience and a sense of independence. Peg had a broad range of interests, an open mind and acceptance of others, and a welcoming approach to life. She was an avid reader, bridge player, gardener, and artist.
Peg graduated from Allentown High School in 1944 and set off to Penn State. While there she met her husband Horace J. (Hank) Weymer. They married on June 14, 1947, the same year Peg graduated with a degree in Home Economics. Peg and Hank started their first jobs in northern NJ, before moving to Meadville in 1956. They spent 56 very happy years together until his death in 2004.
Peg taught Home Economics for 14 years, first in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and through the 1970’s at Conneaut Valley High School. Over the years, Peg was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Meadville as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Elder, Stephen Minister and was the founder of LAF - a monthly luncheon. Other volunteer work included being a cub scout and brownie scout leader, Y Teen director, a board member of Hillside Home and the Crawford County Historical Society, and the planner and head of the docents for school tours at the David Mead Log Cabin. She volunteered at the Baldwin Reynolds House as an event planner and textile director. Her interest in antique quilts led to her help with the North West PA quilt documentation project which culminated in the publication Threads of Tradition. In her retirement, Peg operated a quilt business, and she and Hank enjoyed traveling the country searching for quality antique quilts.
Peg was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a young daughter Elizabeth Margaret in 1968, and her sister Rebecca Till. She is survived by 4 children: John Weymer (Marilyn) of Plano, Texas; Richard Weymer (Beth) of Strasburg, PA; Christine Bailey (Jack) of Meadville, PA; and David Weymer (Carol) of Annapolis, MD; 11 grandchildren: Katie Mo (Richard), Craig Weymer, Bradley Weymer (Ruifang), Hilary Weymer Thompson (Adam), Bethany Weymer Colon (Hector), Sarah Bailey McCall (Peter), Leslie Bailey (Jonathan Horowitz), John Bailey (Allison), Drew Weymer, Erin Weymer, and Jack Weymer; 15 great grandchildren: McKenna, Cade, Hank, Lila, Charlotte, Han, Hector, Emma, Max, Oliver, James, Elise, George, Jay, and Blaire; and she was looking forward to welcoming her sixteenth great grandchild in early summer. She is also survived by a sister, Sally Gillispie, of Massachusetts, and several nieces and nephews.
Peg felt richly blessed to have had her loving husband for 56 years as well as her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. These were the true joys of her life along with her sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends. While she will be very much missed, she will remain a loving inspiration to her family and those who knew her.
