Gerald H. (Jerry) Carnes, age 98, passed away peacefully at his home in Meadville, PA Monday, May 13, 2013. He was born March 16, 1915 in Meadville, the son of Archie and Genevieve Redman Carnes. He married Anna M. Krawczyn Carnes of Albion, PA on October 15, 1938. She predeceased him on March 31, 1995. He was also predeceased by his oldest son, Thomas S. Carnes of Wilmington, NC on October 31, 2012. He graduated from Meadville High School and worked at the Talon Fastener Company retiring after forty-three years of service to the company most of which was at Talon Plant 5 with about 1000 of his closest friends. Following his retirement he worked eleven more years as a bookkeeper and office assistant for his son, Gerald Carnes, CPA of Meadville and Edinboro. He ultimately retired at age 74. His favorite phrase was "I wish I was still working at Talon". Jerry was active in the Christ Episcopal Church of Meadville, serving as a Lay Reader, Eucharistic Minister, Sunday School Teacher, and past Superintendent of Sunday School. He was also active in youth sports and was a past President of Meadville Youth baseball, a Pennsylvania State Tournament Director, and one of several founding fathers who located land and built the first ball field at the Fairgrounds Complex. He enjoyed bowling for his beloved Deerhead Inn Plaza Lanes Team, he played league golf at virtually every public golf course in the area. He fished all local streams, lakes, and other bodies of water in the area. He was a former fast pitch softball league player and pitched for the Meadville Moose Club. He hunted for many years until his grandchildren began to absorb his time. Jerry enjoyed greatly and was a pioneer in the art of tailgating with his family at Penn State home games. He was well known for his home brewed beer, homemade Dandelion wine, and friends came across the country to taste his Tom & Jerry's during the Christmas season. Jerry was a happy person with a great sense of humor who led a happy life. He only had friends, his glass was always full. He will be missed by all who knew him and touched his life. He is survived by his son, Gerald H. Carnes, Jr. and his wife, Anna, of Meadville, PA, daughter-in-law Roberta Carnes of Wilmington, NC, grandsons, Mark Carnes of Atlanta, Andrew Carnes of Pittsburgh, Ben Carnes of Raleigh, NC, Jonathon Carnes of Wilmington, NC, granddaughter Jennifer Carnes of New York City, and two great-grandchildren, Alexis Carnes and Cody Carnes of Atlanta, GA Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be made to the Hospice of Crawford County, Inc. 464 Pine Street, Meadville, PA 16335 or to a charity of one's choice.
