Harold L. Smith, age 84, of Guys Mills, PA passed away on Wednesday August 28, 2024 with his family by his side at Crawford Care Center. He was born at home on April 7, 1940 in Townville, PA to the late Robert L. and Sarah (Reed) Smith. He married Shirley Greathouse on July 11, 1959. She survives.
Harold proudly served in the US Navy (after he graduated from high school) on the USS Sperry as a corpsman. After being honorably discharged in 1962 he worked as an OR technician at Meadville City Hospital. He then worked for many years for Dr. William T. Holland as an ophthalmologic assistant. He was one of the first 30 certified ophthalmic assistants in the United States. After Dr. Holland retired, Harold finished his working career at Greenville Center for Sight until his own retirement.
He was a lifetime member of the Black Ash Sportsman Club, as he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved his black lab, Casey. He was also a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge.
In addition to his loving wife of 65 years, Harold is survived by his daughter, Julie Smith and her husband, John R. of Saegertown, PA; his grandson, Jarrett Walters and his great-grandson, Carson Walters; his sister, Bonnie Lenhart of Guys Mills, PA; his brother, Ronald Smith and his wife, Karla of KS and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Robert L. Smith and Sarah Reed Smith Brown, he was preceded in death by his step-father, James (“J.O.”) Brown; his brother, Ralph L. Smith and his sister, Beverly Lojek.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Harold will be laid to rest at Black Ash Cemetery, Guys Mills, PA.
