Janet Morton, age 80, of Cambridge Springs, PA passed away at home on Friday May 23, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was born on June 27, 1944 in Cambridge Springs, PA to the late Harold O. and Anna F. (Zemick) Drake. She married Marvin E. Morton on April 10, 1964 and they have never been apart for 61 years.
Janet graduated from Cambridge Springs High School and earned her Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Edinboro University. She was an English and Science teacher at both Saegertown and Cambridge Springs Elementary schools. She was a Golden Apple winner-which should be no surprise to her prior students because she was famous in the classroom.
Janet most recently attended McLane Church in Edinboro and was passionate about Bible study where friendships were so important to her.
Her vivacious spirit lead her to pursue many interests such as golf, scuba diving, canning, hunting, fishing and horseback riding. She was even a Master Gardener, and you could have met her working the Master Gardener booth at the Crawford County Fair. She also went on Mission trips with her church and she volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Just a few months ago, Janet went skydiving, as you can see her in her flight suit in the adjacent photo. She said that as she was soaring through the air she “felt free.”
In addition to her husband Marvin, she is survived by her daughter, Danielle Varner and her husband, Eric of Cambridge Springs, PA and her granddaughter, the apple of her eye, Shylee Varner; who got to fulfill her Nana’s dream of scuba diving together. She is also survived by her siblings, who meant everything to her, Louise Uhlman of Cambridge Springs, PA, Ginger Beck and her husband, Jim of Cambridge Springs, PA and Tom and Kris Drake of Edinboro, PA and Danielle’s godfather, David Wise of Cambridge Springs, PA.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter’s godmother, Janet Wise and her brother-in-law, Don Uhlman.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
The family would like to thank Dr. Rothman and the Venango County Hospice team for their excellent care.
