John E. Groover, 84, of Wesbury for a brief time, and formerly of Meadville, passed away on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013. He was born on May 6, 1928, in Franklin, a son of John Edwin Groover Sr. and Virginia Green Groover. John married Bernice Dempsey and she preceded him in death in 1997, he then married Ann L. Fox, and she preceded him in death on December 21, 2006. He was a 1948 graduate of Meadville High School and in 1960 received a technical degree from the National Radio Institute in Washington DC. He owned and operated his own TV and radio repair service in the 60s until 1979 and did TV repair at both hospitals in Meadville. He was an electrician for Westinghouse, Sunbeam and Seco-Warwick, retiring when he was 72 years old. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving from July 1945 to July 1946. He was also in the Navy Reserves from May 1953 to Sept. 1956. He was a life member of VFW Post #2006 where he was past commander from 1979 to 1980, and Quarter Master of Erie and Crawford County council for eight years from 1987 to 1995; and a member of the ICC Club. John was a member of First Baptist Church in Meadville and was a past Trustee, FIC Class, and served as custodian of the church for many years. John is survived by two daughters Beverly Rappa and her husband Samuel of Meadville; Brenda Wood of Meadville; three sons Mark Groover and his significant other Ronda Lemke; Brian Groover and his wife Karen; Michael Groover and his wife Shelly; all of Meadville; 11 grandchildren, Matthew Rappa, Amy Rappa, Amanda Knaus, Alexis Smith, Brooke Groover, Christian Groover, Patrick Groover, Seth Groover, Tate Groover, Nathan Groover, Alicia Groover; four great-grandchildren; one brother William Groover and his wife Judy of Meadville; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives Bernice Dempsey Groover, and Ann Fox Groover, and two sisters Ann Hefferman and Betty Erwin. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm at Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home, 614 Baldwin Street, with a funeral service on Thursday at 10am at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Jerry Walton of First Baptist Church and a military service by VFW Post #2006. Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
