John Thomas Hughes passed away April 2, 2020 at his home, with his loving wife at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born in Meadville, PA to George Arden and Florence (Bowman) Hughes on December 18, 1957.
He was married to Karen Vogan on September 3, 2015 in Guys Mills, PA.
John was a graduate of Meadville Senior High as well as Penn State University. He was an avid fan and loved his Nittany Lions.
He had an employment history that included the Meadville Tribune, Systematic Tool, owner of Associated Tool and aftermarket sales at Seco Warwick, and most recently, Marlan Tool of which the family would like to extend a special thank you for going above and beyond during this difficult time.
John was a lifetime member of MP Davis Hose Company, West Mead #1 VFD and National Rifle Association. He was a member of the Drafting Occupational Advisory Committee for Crawford County Career and Technical Center.
His past hobbies include hunting and fishing. He was on a league for a number of years at Plaza Bowling Lanes. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle with his wife. He also enjoyed many trips with the “Vogan” family to Cape Hatteras, NC.
He is survived by his spouse, Karen Vogan Hughes; his father, George Arden Hughes of Meadville, PA; a brother, Gary Hughes and his wife, Robin of Columbus, OH; a sister, Joanie Hughes Opelt and her husband, Ric of Cochranton, PA; two sons, Marc Hughes and his wife, Linda of Suffolk, VA and Eric Hughes and his significant other, Lauren George of Meadville, PA; his grandchildren, Chad and Chloe Hughes of Suffolk, VA and Connor Hughes of Meadville, PA; two stepsons, Shane Malone of Meadville, PA and Tim Malone and his wife, Devin of North East, PA; a step granddaughter, Fiona Malone of North East, PA and four sister-in-laws, Barbara (Kenneth) Schutz of Meadville, PA, Judy (George) Ferrari of Zephr Hills, FL, Connie Proper of Guys Mills, PA and Sherry (Barry) Heath of Townville, PA and one brother-in-law, Jim (Mary) Vogan of Guys Mills, PA.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Bowman Hughes; a brother, James Arden Hughes; a daughter, Carrie Ann Hughes; maternal grandparents, J.C. and Dorothy Bowman and paternal grandparents, Rupert and Maude Hughes.
An open casket viewing will be at Greendale Cemetery, Meadville, PA from 1-3 pm on Monday, April 6, 2020. Burial will immediately follow. You may pay respects from your vehicle by driving by or you may pay your respects at the casket. Whatever you feel comfortable with is what the family suggests. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
