John David Van Honk, of Conneaut Lake and more recently Meadville, peacefully passed away at home on October 2, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Erie, Pa on November 17, 1933. After graduating from Millcreek (McDowell High School) in 1952, he attended Lock Haven Teachers College from 1952 to 1954. He served our Country in Germany from 1954 to 1956, in the Army. He then graduated from Edinboro State Teachers College in 1960. His passion was teaching and coaching at Conneaut Lake High School from 1960 to 1993. He taught Social Studies, Geography and History. He loved coaching little league, senior league, and American Legion baseball during his summers. He coached girls and boys basketball, baseball, and football during his tenure at the CLAHS. He was the assistant coach of the 1980-81 girls State Championship basketball team. He was a member of the Conneaut Lake Borough Council, a life member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the Conneaut Lake Park Volunteer Fire Department. He led by example, earning the trust and respect from all who knew him. His influence on his family, students, and friends, will impact generations to follow. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerrit and Bernice Van Honk, his brother George Van Honk, his son, Brian Van Honk, and his daughter Lennie Latimer. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Van Honk, his children, Cheryl Mason, Kevin and his wife Artie Van Honk, David and his wife Loretta Van Honk, Dana Van Honk, Chris and his wife Debbie Van Honk, and Tom Van Honk. His grandchildren, Conor and Hannah Mason, Drew and Katie Van Honk, Shaunna Rushing, Christopher Jr. Van Honk, Michelle Van Honk, and Samantha and Olivia Van Honk. Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church 240 N Third Street, Conneaut Lake at 2pm Saturday October 5. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Conneaut Lake Trinity United Methodist Church.
