Kathaleen Carlino

March 11, 1920 — January 22, 2012

Kay was a graduate of Warren High School Class of 1937. She married Albert V. Carlino July 12, 1941, in Christ Episocal Church, Meadville. Kay was the oldest of the six Kiernan children. As a youngster growing up in the 1920s and 1930s, Kay learned to knit and assisted her mother Emma, with her business, "The Kiernan Knit Shop." Her mother started the business because everyone was knitting for the troops during WWII. Even though Kay was a high school student, she could look at patterns and peoples' work and figure out where the mistakes were and repair them. She was a talented knitter, crocheter and seamstress, who over the years taught many people how to knit, crochet and sew. She also created many of her own designs and won numerous blue ribbons at the Crawford County Fair. In her later years she enjoyed being a judge for the needlework department at the Crawford County Fair and also served as a poll watcher at the Senior Center during political elections. Kay worked for Crawford Manufacturing Company, Shulock and later as a computer operator in the billing department of Spauldings, Inc., on of the earliest local businesses to use computers for billing and inventory. She was interested in learning all she could about a wide variety of subjects through reading and classes. Kay also loved to travel with her husband, who was a part-time pilot and especially loved to read and do activities with her Meadville grandchildren. She had a delightful sense of humor and unending patience and somehow made it through 91 years without swearing, arguing, or raising her voice. She had the gift to be able to talk to anyone about anything. She loved to keep informed about local events and attended open houses for local businesses and also local ribbon cutting ceremonies.
