Lewis W. Shorts

Lewis W. (Uncle Lew) Shorts, age 89 of Meadville, PA went to join Jesus on Thursday at Wesbury United Methodist Community. Lewis was born July 28, 1925 in Bullion, PA the son of the late Oren M. and Margaret Henninger Shorts. He married Charlotte Ann Boal on July 27, 1946. She survives. He was a graduate of Cochranton High School. He was a World War II veteran having served in the European Theatre of Operation. He was decorated many times for outstanding achievements during the invasion of Europe. He was an expert rifleman-pistol and anti tank weapons. He was an instructor on anti tank weapons 37millimerter & 57 millimeter, training officers how to operate them with precision and accuracy. He entered the service on November 11, 1943 in New Cumberland, PA and was honorably discharged at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation on February 17, 1946. Lewis was a Life Time member of the VFW Post 2006 in Meadville, PA and a member of the American Legion. After he returned from the war, he married Charlotte Boal. Upon returning from the war, he went to work for Moore Milk Company, then to Meadow Brook Dairy where he retired after 43 years. Lew was a 60 plus year member of Grace United Methodist Church. Lew was a certified Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church, Western Pennsylvania Conference. He served as a Lay Leader at Grace United Methodist Church for many years. He loved his two daughters and their families and bragged about their accomplishments. He loved to bowl and pitch horse shoes. He enjoyed the drive to Massachusetts and to Louisiana to visit the daughters until it got to be too much of a hassle to fight traffic. Lew and Charlotte also enjoyed High School Basketball games and Allegheny College basketball games having attended the home games. Lewis is survived by his wife of 68 years, Charlotte B. Shorts, two daughters; Mary Lou Brown of Pittsfield, MA, and Margaret (Mickey) Jill Ziegler of Covington, LA, eight grandchildren; Adam Ziegler, Ben Ziegler, John Ziegler, Molly Ziegler, Jill Svirida, Jacob Brown, Lucas Brown and Nathan Brown, three great-grandchildren; Owen Ziegler, Mae Ziegler and Henry Svirida, a brother; DeWayne Shorts of Cooperstown, PA. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by three brothers, Oren Shorts, Ralph Shorts, and Frank Shorts, and by two sisters, Corabelle Wilson, Grace Shorts. Family and Friends may attend the Memorial Service that will be held on Saturday, November 15th at 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 828 N. Main Street, Meadville with the Rev. Robert Goodnough officiating. Inurnment will be in the Cooperstown Cemetery.
