Lynn E. Hanks

Lynn E. Hanks, age 88, of Meadville, PA passed away on Monday, June 2, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born January 13, 1926 in Meadville, PA the son of the late Simeon G. and Rena A. Patterson Hanks at their home on Liberty Street. He attended the Meadville public schools and the Meadville Vocational School in the daytime and worked at Palmers Bros. Drop Forge Company in the tool and die room in the evenings. After serving a short period in the United States Navy, he worked for F W Woolworth Co as a store manager throughout the New England states starting in PA, NY, CT, VT and a stretch in FL. After leaving the store business in Vermont, he returned to Darien, Connecticut and re-entered the tool making trade at the Electric Indicator Co, where he retired in l992 after 37 years as Chief Elecro-Mech designer in the Engineering Department, running the engineering department in the absence of the Chief Engineer. He met his wife Shirley Jean Scribner in Stamford, CT, and married on June 17, 1950 in Darien, CT. They lived in various New England Towns and raised a family of five children in Darien CT. After celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 2000 with a gala party and lots of friends, they moved to Meadville, PA They had four daughters, two sons, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Twin daughters, Sharon L. and Karen L. were born early and Karen was unable to survive the rigors of life and died on the third day of her life. Sharon L. Hanks Bixler and her husband R. Allan Bixler, of Darien CT were married and are the parents of grandson, Cory A. Bixler. Another daughter, Carole L. Hanks Ponichtera, had three daughters, first Verity L. Ponichtera who is the mother of the great-granddaughter, Zowie K. Ponichtera; second Jesse Ponichtera Duran, wife of Matt Duran who are the parents to the great-grandson, Benjamin Duran and the last listed but certainly not the least is Rebecca J. Ponchtera of Arizona. Another daughter, Marjorie R. (Marjorie) Hanks, was born and lives in Los Alamito, CA Also two sons were born: John W. Hanks of Darien CT and William F. Hanks of Mesa AZ. He is further survived by a sister, Carol Hanks Curry and her husband, Richard of Meadville, PA In addition to his parents, and his daughter, Karen L. Hanks, Lynn was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard Hanks, Edward Hanks, Fred Hanks, Frank Hanks, and by a sister, Arlene Wickwire . Lynn Hanks was active in the volunteer fire department, the early Fire Marshall of Darien, the Republican political party of Darien, an elected representative of the town Committee, a member of the Lion's Club. He enjoyed salt water fishing and gardening, and enjoyed traveling on behalf of the company he worked for. He was active in both the United Methodist Church of Darien and the Grace United Methodist Church in Meadville. Lynn was also a member of Masonic Lodge #408, Meadville, PA He later traced the Hanks and the Scribner family genealogy via museums, historical societies, old churches and colonial cemeteries. He and his wife struck a deal; if he would learn to dance, she would learn to play cards. They did and a good time was had by both. They would have celebrated their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary this year. A memorial service is being planned for Friday, June 27, 2014 at 11AM at Grace United Methodist Church, 828 North Main Street, Meadville, PA with Rev. Robert Goodnough, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be at the Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien Ct at a later date.
