Nathaniel Powell, 77, of Meadville passed away peacefully on March 26, 2018 following a courageous battle with illness. He was born May 23, 1940, in Canton, Mississippi. After graduating from Meadville High School he attended the Cleveland Institute of Art. While in high school he was awarded the Scholastic Gold Key in Art. Nathaniel spent much of his time engaged in his passion for art and music; drawing, painting in all mediums, sculpturing and playing the piano and organ. During the 1950’s he was a member of a “doo-wop” singing group that appeared on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour, a televised talent show that was aired during the fifties. Nathaniel was strong and an encourager. Although he was experiencing serious health problems he never complained but rather tried to lift the spirit of others around him. He could be heard singing throughout the entirety of his illness. During his earlier years, he attended Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Meadville. Preceding Nathaniel in death, in addition to his parents, Peter and Annie Powell, were his brothers, Henry Powell and Ott Powell. Left to mourn his passing are sisters, Eva Jones of Meadville and Annette Walls of Houston, PA and a brother Peter Powell of Meadville, as well as many nieces and nephews. “God saw him getting tired and a cure was not to be; so he put His arms around him, and whispered come to me. With tearful eyes we watched him and saw him pass away; Although we loved him dearly; we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating; hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.” The family will always be thankful to the staff at the Quality Living Center and the Crawford County Care Center for their care of our brother and on many occasions going beyond their duty to fulfill Nathaniel’s requests. At the request of the family, all services will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Quality Living Center or the Crawford County Care Center. Nathaniel will be remembered as a kind and gentle person who loved art and music.
