Richard “Mike” Kenneth Humes, age 88, of Meadville exhaled his last Earthly breath on December 15, 2019 and breathed in eternal life in the presence of God. He was born October 26, 1931 in Erie, PA to the late James Albert and Ellen Josephine (Melquist) Humes. He married Carole Kindervater on July 2, 1955. She survives.
He was known by his friends as “Mike” because his father called him “Monkey Mike” as a child and the name stuck.
Mike proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War conflict as a Military Police Officer in Tokoyo, Japan. While he was there, he was chosen to take on a bit part in the movie “The Bridges at ToKoRi.” His grandson, Michael, who looked up to his grandfather as his hero, followed in his footsteps by currently serving as a Military Police Officer for the US Navy.
Mike worked as a communication maintainer for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad Company (which later became known as ConRail.) He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union.
He was a member of The New Beginnings Church of God.
Mike enjoyed scroll woodworking, gardening, camping and traveling with his wife in their later years. He attended Bible study under the loving guidance of Pastor Temple and Joyce Jarrell. He enjoyed volunteering at the church as a greeter and bulletin folder. He was a “jack of all trades”; working on his own cars and when having trouble fixing things, he would work relentlessly until he could figure it out on his own. Mike was always fidgeting, often tapping his fingers to the tune of favorite hymns that constantly flowed through his head. If he didn’t have anything to do, he would find or make up something to do. He was a tinkerer.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carole of Meadville; one daughter, Sharleen E. Johnson and her husband, William of Burgettston, PA; two sons, Mark E. Humes of Meadville, PA and John A. Humes of Meadville, PA and one son-in-law, Jeffrey Taylor of Fennelton, PA; 10 grandchildren, Adam and Megan Taylor, Marc Humes (Alison), Benjamin Johnson (Gabby Murdock), Tyler, Michael and Amanda Johnson, Jennifer Woodyard, Patricia Christlieb (Scott) and Leslie Humes; 10 great- grandchildren, Marinna Baker, Autumn Simunich, Jimi and Axl Taylor, Zoey Greene, Alyssa and Skyler Christlieb, Aiden King and Gemma Humes and Chloe Grace Johnson; one sister, Nancy Hetrick of Sharon, PA and multiple nieces, nephews and cousins and his beloved dog, Lucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Cheryl A. Taylor; his great-granddaughter, Cheryl Lynn Baker; 2 brothers; 2 sisters and his beloved dog and faithful companion, Misty “The Huntress.”
